ARLINGTON — Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was clearly in a celebratory mood on Thanksgiving Day.

For the entirety of his meeting with reporters, Jones held a turkey leg in his hand. That wouldn’t be the only item he’d claim after Dallas’ 31-28 win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday.

By defeating the Chiefs, the Cowboys secured the Preston Road Trophy. The trophy, created by Lamar Hunt in 1998, goes to the winner of Cowboys-Chiefs matchups. Kansas City last held the trophy by virtue of its 2021 win over Dallas.

Jones spoke highly of Hunt and his family on Thursday, describing the former Dallas Texans/Kansas City Chiefs owner as “a true founder of the NFL.” Jones also recalled how Hunt would display the Preston Road Trophy by the front window of his Dallas home.

The Cowboys owner wasn’t clear on when he’d receive the trophy, but he seemed sure Chiefs CEO Clark Hunt would deliver the award in a timely fashion.

“Lamar was sly regarding this trophy and a little clever with it. I think Clark and his family will be a little more honorable about getting it over on time,” Jones said. “I’m going to say this, I was slow getting back, too. That’s just the way it works.”

Jones was later asked if his wife, Gene, would be OK with placing the trophy by the front window.

“Well, she sure will. Gene loves these wins more than me. She’s never missed a game since we’ve owned the Cowboys,” Jones said. “Yeah, she’ll let us put it in there. We’ll put it right at the foot of the bed.”
