The Cuero Gobblers pulled away from the Rockport-Fulton Pirates in the fourth quarter to take a 48-27 victory in their Class 4A Division II regional semifinal game on Friday at Corpus Christi’s Buccaneer Stadium.

The Pirates ended the season with an 8-5 record, while the Gobblers (12-1) advanced to face the Sinton Pirates (12-1) in the Region IV final Friday at 7 p.m. at San Antonio’s Heroes Stadium.

Rockport-Fulton trailed 21-14 at halftime and tied the game at 21-all on Traey Alvarado’s 53-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter.

Cuero answered with a pair of touchdowns to take a 34-21 lead before Alvarado’s 13-yard TD run pulled the Pirates within 34-27 midway in the fourth quarter.

But the Gobblers, who lost 57-56 earlier in the season to Rockport-Fulton, answered with a pair of touchdowns in the final four minutes to seal the victory.

Cuero jumped out to a 14-0 lead before Jaxon Keown’s 8-yard TD run midway in the second quarter cut the Gobblers’ lead to 14-6.
