The Longhorns had managed nine rushing plays of 10 or more yards in their last five games coming into Friday. They broke off nine such plays against the Aggies in a remarkable performance by the least efficient rushing offense of coach Steve Sarkisian’s tenure.

Six of those plays came in the second half, accounting for over 23% of the explosive rushes managed by Texas against Power Four opposition in a span of 30 minutes.
“We started out with a real wide zone mentality with the ball,” Sarkisian said after the game. “We kind of tightened it up and ran a little power. We got back to the wide zone again with some pulls, some pullers, and then we got back to some tight zone with some sliders. So it all worked out. I thought the guys were really engaged and focused on what they needed to do.”

The Longhorns overpowered the Aggies with three rushing plays of 30 or more yards. All of them, including Manning’s, involved pre-snap movement from the sliders Sarkisian mentioned.
When Quintrevion Wisner broke off a 48-yard rush early in the third quarter, motion from Ryan Wingo dragged one of the Texas A&M safeties out of position. Wisner ran right toward the part of the field he vacated.
With Texas looking to close out the game late in the fourth quarter, Wisner padded his stat line with a 30-yard rush. Again, Wingo motioned from one side of the line of scrimmage to the other. This time, Wisner ran to the stronger side.

In two career games against the Aggies, Wisner has 341 rushing yards.
“Something about him, he just shows up in these rivalry games,” Manning said. “He balls out. It’s funny.”

How Texas football limited Aggies pass rusher Cashius Howell
It takes some searching to find Cashius Howell’s name on Friday night’s stat sheet.

The Texas A&M edge rusher entered this week with 11½ sacks, which led the SEC. But the Longhorns limited him to three tackles and one tackle for loss.
Most of that good work came from left tackle Trevor Goosby, who allowed just one quarterback pressure on 38 pass-rush reps, a majority of which came against Howell. Right tackle Brandon Baker also held his own. He gave up two quarterback pressures against the Aggies, while also playing against Howell for a healthy percentage of the game.
Howell came into Friday night pressuring opposing quarterbacks on over 15% of his pass rush reps. The Longhorns held him to a 10% pressure rate, his third-worst output of the year.

Maybe that’s a surprising outcome to some, considering Texas’ yearlong struggles to protect Manning, who was sacked twice and pressured on 37% of his drobpacks against the Aggies.
But UT’s tackles have rarely been culpable, especially in the second half of the season, when Goosby and Baker have combined to allow just 22 quarterback pressures in six games.
Most of the pressure has come from the interior of the offensive line, and that was the case again Friday night, when the Aggies picked on left guard Cole Hutson in particular. On the season, 57.5% of the pressure sent Manning’s way has come from the interior offensive line positions.
Texas Longhorn pass rush isn’t prolific, but still makes an impact
On several occasions, Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed has been gifted the kind of pass protection quarterbacks dream of. In four of the Aggies’ seven conference games before Friday night, Reed had been pressured on less than 20% of his dropbacks.
Article continues below this ad
The Longhorns managed to make him slightly more uncomfortable. Texas registered pressure on 14 of Reed’s 41 dropbacks — a rate of 34.1%. And it achieved that while only blitzing on six of those passing downs.
Texas sacked Reed just once. But it disrupted him much more frequently. Reed attempted nine passes under pressure, completing just two of them for an average of 3.9 yards per attempt. The interception that just about sealed the game came after Ethan Burke and Justus Terry rushed Reed, forcing him into a bad decision.
Reed enjoyed more success with his legs against the Texas defense. The 71 rushing yards he picked up were the most allowed to a quarterback all year by the Longhorns, who have played a schedule loaded with dual-threat QBs like Taylen Green and Diego Pavia.

According to linebacker Liona Lefau, Texas decided against deploying a spy against Reed on every snap.
“Sometimes, not the whole time,” Lefau explained. “The coaches did a great job of preaching, no matter what, if we’re dropping, if we’re blitzing, always be ready, because he can tuck it in and run.”

What was Steve Sarkisian thinking on the opening play of the game?
Attentive Texas fans may have noticed that the Longhorns came into Friday having started four consecutive games with screen passes to wide receiver Ryan Wingo.
Article continues below this ad
Sarkisian was aware of the tendency, and he knew the Aggies would be, too.
“You know, take a shot,” Sarkisian said. “Pete Carroll used to always tell me about that first play of the game, it’s just another play in the game. And I felt like, hey, if they’re going to try to overplay Ryan, maybe we can get it.”
Sarkisian devised a double pass play, sending Wingo in motion from left to right as Manning tossed him the ball in the backfield. But the Aggies had one more man on that side of the field than Texas was equipped to block, and the play was blown up. Wingo danced around and chucked an ill-advised prayer toward Emmett Mosley V that, fortunately for the Longhorns, fell harmlessly to the turf.
“We got the corner,” Sarkisian said. “Unfortunately, we didn’t block the middle linebacker, so we had a little bit of an issue on the play.”

The Texas football true freshman report
When Nick Townsend is in the game, it’s typically easy to guess what’s coming. Townsend generally gets the nod in UT’s jumbo packages, when the Longhorns’ objective is to run the ball downhill between the tackles. Sixty-three of his 97 snaps as a true freshman have been spent run blocking.
When he came in motion and received the ball on an end-around play in the fourth quarter, the Aggies failed to set the edge, overplaying the conventional handoff they thought was coming. Townsend coasted into the end zone to put the Longhorns up 20-10.

Townsend was one of seven true freshmen to see the field Friday night, joining Daylan McCutcheon, Graceson Littleton, Jonah Williams, Justus Terry, Kade Phillips and Lance Jackson.
Littleton was credited with three tackles and half of a tackle for loss from his slot corner position. Terry registered a tackle, too, and pressured Reed ahead of one of his interceptions.
