COLLEGE STATION — While much of the top five handled business in Week 14, Texas A&M football can’t say the same.

With a chance to lock down a spot in the Southeastern Conference championship game, the Aggies fell to Texas in Austin 27-17.

The defeat will push A&M out of the top five in the College Football Playoffs for the first time slide out of the top five since Sept. 28. Those were the sixth rankings of the season, pinning the Aggies sixth after beating Auburn

Conference championships are the only games left to be played, so the opportunity to improve résumés is largely over. 

Power Four programs like the Aggies, who can no longer win their conference, have to now wait for the CFP committee’s final two rankings.

Losses within CFP top 25

Six teams in the CFP top 25 rankings lost. A&M’s loss is most notable, as it featured the highest-rated team to drop. No. 16 Texas took down the Aggies for the second season in a row, keeping the Lone Star Showdown trophy in Austin.

No. 23 Georgia Tech fell to No. 4 Georgia, 16-9, while No. 20 Arizona State was beaten by No. 25 Arizona, 23-7.

No. 22 Pittsburgh was manhandled by No. 12 Miami, 38-7. No. 14 Vanderbilt took down No. 19 Tennessee 45-24, lifting Diego Pavia squarely into the Heisman Trophy conversation.

Unranked California took down No. 21 SMU, 38-35, costing the Mustangs a spot in the ACC title game.

CFP rankings: How did the top five do in Week 14?

Top-ranked Ohio State defeated Michigan, 27-9, while No. 2 Indiana smashed Purdue 56-3.

Fourth-ranked Georgia avoided an upset in what was a one-score game for much of the night, clinching the Bulldogs’ spot in the SEC championship game versus Alabama.

Texas A&M’s standing for 1st round bye

A&M’s chance at a first-round bye is officially gone. It lost the opportunity to play for their first-ever SEC title game, and with that, the possibility of earning a first-round bye that comes with winning their conference.
