That leaves Texas’ fate in the hands of the College Football Playoff selection committee. How strongly will it value the Longhorns’ victory over the No. 3 Aggies? Will it be enough for them to lift Texas above teams that also won this week?

That’s what the Longhorns are depending on. With at least two automatic playoff bids likely to go to teams outside the top 12, Texas will need to be ranked in the top 10 when the field is selected on Dec. 7.

No. 1 Ohio State 27, No. 15 Michigan 9: This result keeps Michigan out of the Big Ten title game, where it could have stolen a bid, and will move the Longhorns above the Wolverines in this week’s rankings.

No. 8 Oklahoma 17, LSU 13: The Sooners were oh-so-close to slipping up at home against LSU, an outcome that likely would have moved the Longhorns above their rivals, considering their decisive head-to-head win. Instead, OU secured its spot in the field.
No. 9 Notre Dame 49, Stanford 20: What will the committee do with Notre Dame? The Fighting Irish don’t have a marquee win, but they’ve obliterated most of the food put in front of them on their schedule, including a helpless Stanford team.
No. 10 Alabama 27, Auburn 20: A three-loss Alabama would have made an interesting comparison with a three-loss Texas, considering the quality wins on both resumes. By surviving a scare from Auburn, the Crimson Tide stayed in front of the Longhorns in the pecking order.
No. 11 BYU 41, UCF 21: Somebody has to claim the Big 12’s auto bid. The Longhorns will now have to hope that team is Texas Tech, and that the committee drops BYU below Texas if the Cougars lose in the title game.

No. 12 Miami 38, No. 22 Pitt 7: The worst-case scenario played out for Texas as it relates to Miami. The Hurricanes secured a decisive, ranked road win that is likely to impress the committee. They also didn’t get the help they needed to book a place in the ACC title game, meaning the ACC’s auto bid will go to a team outside the top 12, while Miami remains an at-large factor.
No. 13 Utah 31, Kansas 21: The Utes have no elite wins, and are a team that the Longhorns can leapfrog on the strength of their win over the Aggies. Still, a loss would have helped Texas. Utah outscored Kansas 21-7 in the fourth quarter to pull one out of the fire.
No. 14 Vanderbilt 45, No. 19 Tennessee 24: The Longhorns have the head-to-head comparison against Vanderbilt, but the Commodores demolished Tennessee on Rocky Top as they remained a two-loss team in their bid to crack their first CFP.
