Police said one of its officers had “just left the police station” when their automobile struck a truck and a man, who was killed in the collision.
GARLAND, Texas — A man was killed in a crash involving a Garland police officer on Friday morning, the department has confirmed.Â
The Garland Police Department said one of its officers had “just left the police station” and was traveling east on the 1500 block of W. State Street at around 6:30 a.m. on Friday when their automobile struck a truck that was stopped in the eastbound lanes of the roadway near the intersection of McKinley Street.Â
According to police, the truck was “blocking the entire eastbound lane of traffic” and its lights were off at the time of the collision. The police department’s press release on the incident also notes that a man, who “was standing at the front of the vehicle in the middle of the road”, was struck in the collision. Â
Officials said that, in the wake of the collision, the man — later identified as 32-year-old Juan Pablo Rios Aguilar — was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The officer involved in the incident was also taken to a hospital for treatment and was later released, the press release stated.
The press release notes that “the officer attempted to avoid the collision but struck the truck and the male.” The release also noted that “it was dark at the time of the crash.”
Records show that Rios Aguilar resided in a home located at the intersection of State Street and McKinley Street, where the crash occurred. That location, maps show, is located half a mile from the Garland Police Station located at 1891 Forest Lane.Â
“This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with everyone affected as the investigation continues,” Garland police said.Â
The investigation into the crash remains active, Garland PD said.Â
