(Mix 93-1) It’s fall garage sale season. As we wait for the cooler weather to arrive, East Texans are busy cleaning out their closets, kids’ rooms, garages, storage sheds, and attics to sell what they no longer need to others who might. We see the signs begin to pop up in the middle of the week to announce the sale this weekend in the neighborhood.
In addition to the neighborhood garage sales, one of the longest garage sales in the U.S. will be happening here in East Texas, too. The Hi-Way 80 Sale is going on this weekend, Friday-Sunday, October 17-19, along historic U.S. Highway 80 that spans across East Texas.
The Hi-Way 80 Sale: A Texas Tradition
Each spring and fall, thousands of garage sales pop up along historic U.S. Highway 80 with bargains for everyone! Once stretching more than 2,400 miles across the southern part of the U.S., Highway 80 went from Savannah, GA, all the way to San Diego, CA. The highway has since been cut into segments and is no longer continuous. The only remaining continuous stretch runs from Tybee Island, Georgia, to the east side of Dallas. Other sections are now controlled by individual states or the US highway department.
When and Where the Garage Sale Happens
October 17th, 18th, and 19th, a 392-mile stretch of the historic U.S. highway will become the site of one of the nation’s longest garage sales. The Hi*Way 80 Sale happens on the third weekend in April and in October. Individuals, along with businesses along the highway, will be setting up shop to participate and sell things in the longest garage sale stretching from Mesquite, Texas, to Jackson, Mississippi.
This garage sale will pass through several East Texas towns, including Terrell, Wills Point, Grand Saline, Mineola, Hawkins, Big Sandy, Gladewater, White Oak, Longview, Hallsville, Marshall, and Waskom.

With all kinds of businesses opening their doors and pop-up garage sales along the historic route this year, you will find something to purchase, whether you need it or not!
