Gina Ortiz Jones departed for Mexico City Monday on her first international trip as San Antonio Mayor.

The trip, in collaboration with the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, will include meetings with high-level Mexican government officials, U.S. Embassy representatives and U.S.-based companies operating south of the border.

During a recent KENS 5 appearance, Jones said she’s excited about the meetings and hopes the excursion will strengthen economic, cultural and diplomatic ties with San Antonio’s largest international trading partner.

“Obviously, Mexico is one of our country’s key partners, and our city has a very special history — culturally, economically, historically — with Mexico,” Jones told the TV station. “I will spend most of my time in Mexico City, engaging with the leaders there and largely focused on trade. I think, again, really, it’s those economic ties that we can never forget about. Those are so, so critical.”

Jones’ trip to Mexico is the mayor’s latest effort to drum up international investment in the Alamo City.

In late August, the mayor met with a delegation of Taiwanese semiconductor chip manufacturers looking to establish U.S. operations. Days later, she met with a delegation from the Canamry Islands to promote two-way tourism and strengthen relations between the two regions’ small-business communities.

Jones is expected to return to San Antonio on Thursday.
