Texas Tech head football coach Joey McGuire has agreed to a new seven-year contract extension with the Red Raiders, according to Yahoo! Sports‘ Ross Dellenger. McGuire’s new contract will run through 2032 and give him an annual salary of more than $7 million per year by the end of the deal, per Dellenger.

The announcement of McGuire’s new contract extension comes just days before he’s set to lead No. 5 Texas Tech (11-1, 8-1 Big 12) into the Big 12 Championship Game against No. 11 BYU (11-1, 8-1 Big 12) at 12 noon ET Saturday (ABC) inside AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

The 54-year-old McGuire is in midst of a breakout fourth season in Lubbock, where he’s already compiled a 34-17 overall record and 24-12 in Big 12 play during his tenure. Prior to landing at Texas Tech in 2022, McGuire spent five years (2017-21) in various roles at Baylor, including associate head coach over his last three seasons.

Before that, though, McGuire built his reputation as a longtime high school coach in the state of Texas, where he turned a struggling Cedar Hill High into a perennial state power, accumulating a stellar 141-42 record with 12 consecutive playoff appearances and three state championships in 14 seasons (2003-16).

No. 5 Texas Tech enters this weekend’s Big 12 Championship game as a 12.5-point favorite over BYU, according to BetMGM, after handing the Cougars their lone loss of the regular season, 29-7, on Nov. 8.

How to watch the Big 12 Championship

Time: 12 pm ET on Saturday, Dec. 6.
Channel: ABC/Fubo TV (streaming)
Location: AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas

Texas Tech made easy work of West Virginia in a 49-0 victory this past Saturday to close out the regular season. The Red Raiders are currently No. 5 in the College Football Playoff rankings, meaning they stand a strong chance of making the field even with a loss in the Big 12 title.

As far as offenses go, Texas Tech is among the best in the country, ranking third in points per game (42.6) and sixth in yards per game (481.6). But the defense has been equally impressive, led by star senior linebacker Jacob Rodriguez. He has seven forced fumbles to lead the country in addition to four interceptions, six passes defended and 104 total tackles entering Saturday.

BYU took care of business with a 41-21 victory against UCF on Saturday to end the regular season with an identical record to Texas Tech. The Cougars are currently No. 11 in the CFP rankings and can only lock up a Playoff spot with a win in Saturday’s Big 12 title game.

This is the first time that either Texas Tech or BYU has appeared in the Big 12 Championship. For the Cougars, this marks only their third year as a member of the conference. Texas Tech owns the all-time series lead, 2-1.
