The North Texas Mean Green have their guy.

The school officially announced Neal Brown as its next head coach. He will replace Eric Morris, who will take over at Oklahoma State at the end of UNT’s season.

Brown, who had head coaching stints at Troy and West Virginia from 2015-24, spent the 2025 season as an assistant coach at Texas after he was fired by West Virginia. In four years as Troy’s head coach, he had a 35-16 record that included three seasons of 10-plus wins. The Trojans also won the Sun Belt Conference in 2017 under Brown.

He compiled a 37-35 record in his six seasons at West Virginia and was ultimately fired after a 6-6 2024 campaign.

“We are thrilled to welcome Neal Brown as our next head football coach,” UNT athletic director Jared Mosley said in a statement. “Neal is a proven leader who builds programs with integrity, vision and an unwavering commitment to developing student-athletes on and off the field.

“His history of elevating rosters, developing talent and producing results in highly competitive leagues makes him an ideal fit for North Texas. We are confident that his leadership will position the Mean Green for sustained success, and we look forward to the impact he and his family will have on our program and our community for years to come.”

Aside from his time with the Longhorns, Brown also gained some experience coaching in the Lone Star State when he served as Texas Tech’s offensive coordinator from 2010-12.

Brown, a Danville, Ky. native, played football for Kentucky under coach Hal Mumme and assistant coach Mike Leach.

“Several key criteria drove my analysis of opportunities this cycle – alignment, relationships, resources, opportunity, and community,“ Brown said in a statement. ”Jared and his team presented a clear vision of why North Texas and Denton check all those boxes and then some. Football in Texas is special and my family and I can’t wait to pour everything we have into the North Texas campus and Denton. Most importantly, our program will always be a player-driven program, and I look forward to getting to know this team and building our roster for the future! For now, let’s all get behind the Mean Green as they prepare to win an American Conference Championship.”
