History

JONESBORO, Arkansas – UT Arlington men’s basketball (6-3) dropped Tuesday night’s contest 83-63 to Sun Belt foe Arkansas State (6-3) after falling behind by 18 in the opening period. The Mavericks pulled as close as 11 in the second half, but it wasn’t enough as they fell in Jonesboro at First National Bank Arena.
 
Three Mavs were in double figures, led by senior guard Marcell McCreary, who scored 16. He has now scored 14.0 points per game over his last seven, scoring at least 13 in six of those games. Sophomore guard Cash Chavis chipped in with 15, which tied his career high set last time out against SFA on Nov. 29. The Arkansas transfer also added five rebounds Senior forward Raysean Seamster kept his streak of games in double figures intact with 11 points. He has now scored at least 10 points in all nine games this season, and 32 of his 39 career appearances with UTA.
 
Despite a quick start for the Mavs that saw them jump out to an early 8-4 lead, it was all Arkansas State in the first half. Buoyed by an 18-3 run, the Red Wolves built their lead to 18 at 39-21 at the break. The Mavs were held scoreless for a stretch of six-plus minutes in the opening half and shot just 36.0% from the field (9-for-25). 18 of UT Arlington’s 21 first half points came in the paint.
 
The Mavericks chipped away early in the second half, and were as close as 11 on a McCreary putback at 45-34, but just could not climb all the way back. UTA was 1-for-19 from distance and 37.1% from the field with just four assists on 14 makes.
 
UTA now has a nine-day break between games before traveling to Edinburg, Texas, to try to bounce back on the road against former conference foe UTRGV on Thursday, Dec. 11, at 6:30 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ and on the Varsity Network App with the Voice of the Mavs, Josh Sours.
