Eight years after a Houston husband and father was shot to death outside his north Harris County apartment complex, investigators say they have finally arrested one of the suspects connected to the case.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office announced that 25-year-old Brian Adams is now in custody and charged with capital murder in the killing of Pedro Aguilar, who died during an attempted carjacking in 2017. Deputies say a recent DNA match through CODIS, the national DNA database, linked Adams to the crime.
Aguilar was shot and killed during what investigators described as a botched carjacking. At the time, deputies said two suspects tried to steal Aguilar’s vehicle outside of his apartment, but realized they didn’t know how to drive a stick shift. Aguilar’s son spoke with ABC13 in 2017, sharing how devoted his father was to his family, saying, “My baby is everything. I want the best for you.”
Detectives released surveillance video and a composite sketch shortly after the shooting, but the case remained unsolved for years.
According to investigators, the breakthrough came when evidence collected the night of the murder was recently processed through CODIS, generating the match that led to Adams’ arrest.
It remains unclear why the DNA evidence was not tested earlier or whether Adams’ connection emerged because of another investigation.
