1. Notable turnover expected in Texas Legislature

With the candidate filing deadline a week away, it’s becoming clearer that there will be a shakeup in the makeup of the Texas Legislature.

Fourteen Republicans announced they are leaving the lower chamber, many for higher office or national advisory boards. But after 40 years, state Rep. John Smithee, R-Amarillo, will retire along with state Rep. Stan Lambert, R-Abilene, and state Rep. Sam Harless, R-Spring.

2. Federal prosecutors say Afghan national made bomb threat on TikTok video in Texas

A Texas man has been charged with making threats online after authorities said a video showing him threatening to build a bomb, conduct a suicide attack and kill Americans was posted to TikTok and other social media sites.

3. Texas makes first bitcoin purchase through comptroller’s office

Texas just became one of the first states to buy bitcoin with a purchase of roughly $5 million, the Dallas Morning News reported.

The transaction, which a state comptroller’s office representative confirmed in an email to the Dallas Morning News, went “through a BlackRock-administered exchange-traded fund.” Such a purchase is a newly legal action under Senate Bill 21, which passed in June and gave the comptroller the ability to create the Texas Strategic Bitcoin Reserve.

AP women’s basketball player of the week is No. 2 Texas’ Rori Harmon

The graduate guard won MVP of the Players Era Championship after leading the Longhorns over then-No. 3 UCLA and No. 2 South Carolina. Against UCLA, Harmon scored 26 points, making 9 of 15 from the field. Harmon added nine assists against the Gamecocks and hit the winning jumper with 0.7 seconds remaining.
