TEXAS — U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Dallas, might be closer to putting her name in the hat for U.S. Senate next year. She scheduled a “special announcement” for Monday at 4:30 p.m., just 90 minutes before the deadline to file for candidacy.
Former U.S. Rep. Colin Allred, D-Dallas, and state Rep. James Talarico, D-Austin, have already flung themselves headfirst into the race. Crockett’s entry would scramble what Democrats thought would be a straightforward primary election.
The GOP primary is between incumbent Sen. John Cornyn, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and U.S. Rep. Wesley Hunt.
Characterized as strong and blunt, Crockett has called out President Donald Trump and his administration publicly on multiple occasions. She’s even received backlash for some of her comments, like when she called Gov. Greg Abott “governor hot wheels” in March.
Crockett told The Dallas Morning News that her campaign conducted internal polling to gauge her ability to win the seat in Texas, a state that hasn’t elected a Democrat to a statewide position in over 30 years.
“The numbers say what I’ve said publicly, they say I can win,” Crockett told The Dallas Morning News.
