Wells committed to the Longhorns just days after visiting in June amidst heavy interest from Auburn and home-state Ole Miss.

As the time to Early Signing Day drew near, Auburn turned up the pressure after working to recruit his twin brother, Chris, who was committed to South Alabama before also signing with Auburn, turning down a reported preferred walk-on offer from Texas. The brothers even made an unofficial visit to The Plains in early September.

Wells is a consensus four-star prospect ranked as the No. 280 player nationally and the No. 31 defensive tackle, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

Texas was able to get consensus four-star defensive tackle James Johnson in the recruiting class, holding off efforts by home-state Miami, with hopes that the Longhorns could make a last-second run at another high-level defensive tackle before the early signing period closes.
