He’s also not planning a watch party for the CFP selection show Sunday with his team unless “we get a little sense of (what) happens on Saturday with the championship games.”

Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian winces during the first quarter of the Lone Star Showdown, the rivalry match-up between the Longhorns and Texas A&M Aggies at Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, Nov. 28, 2025.
Sara Diggins/Austin American-Statesman
While Sarkisian spent most of his time Wednesday discussing a class headlined by five-star quarterback Dia Bell and five-star athlete Jermaine Bishop, he also reiterated the case that he’s made in front of the national media for the past few days about why the Longhorns should make the 12-team playoff, which includes five conference champions and seven at-large selections. The conference champions include ones from the Power Four leagues – the SEC, the Big 12, the Big 10 and the ACC – as well as the highest-rated Group of Five conference champion.

“I guess I’m at a point now where we can agree to disagree on what the principles and the parameters are on what makes up one of the best 12 teams in the country to play in the playoffs,” Sarkisian said. “People like to use the word deserving. And to me, deserving is the five conference champions. They deserve to be in the playoff because they won their conference championship.”
So where does that leave the seven teams that will draw an at-large selection from the CFP committee?

“The other seven teams, to me, that’s not about deserving,” he said. “That’s (about) are they one of the best seven teams remaining to compete for a national championship? And in my humble opinion, we are one of the best seven teams remaining. We’ve played the hardest schedule of all the remaining teams left in the CFP, and that’s supposed to be the No. 1 criteria, strength of schedule. The second (criterion) is supposed to be head-to-head competition. Well, there’s two teams (Oklahoma and Texas A&M) that are in (the CFP top 10) that we beat by multiple scores. So, is that head-to-head competition or not?”

Sarkisian didn’t question the CFP selection committee’s rankings as much as the system’s criteria.
“I have a lot of respect for those guys on the (CFP) committee,” he said. “It’s a hard job, and there’s a lot of really good teams that they’re trying to choose between. They value losses more than they value the wins. At the end of the day, they looked at the record. My point is that’s fine but just tell us what (the criteria) is. I just don’t like contradicting yourself when you tell me it’s about strength of schedule, and you tell me it’s about head-to-head, but yet, then you make a decision predicated on what’s our record. And so that’s my thought on it.
“What I’ve learned out of this whole thing is we’ve got to control what we can control, and we’ve got to win more games. And clearly, we didn’t do enough of that this year.”

Texas won’t have much of a chance to move up the rankings before Sunday’s reveal of the final poll and playoff bracket. Of the teams ranked in the seven spots directly above Texas, only No. 9 Alabama and No. 11 BYU could have a loss added to their résumés in a conference championship game.
