The largest online retailer in the U.S. has brought its drone delivery service to North Texas
Amazon has gone live in Richardson for local customers as it makes its first big push into the region. Customers in the area can use the technology for tens of thousands of items in as little as one hour.
The service, operating from facilities adjacent to a fulfillment center, delivers packages weighing up to 5 pounds within a roughly 7- to 8-mile radius of the facility. Members of Amazon Prime can receive deliveries for $4.99.
The Dallas-Fort Worth area has attracted interest and investments from drone companies in the U.S. and globally for years as it benefits from a relatively open regulatory environment, good weather and regions open to new technology. Walmart, an Amazon rival, has been a key player locally as it works with drone operators.
