Around 8:15 a.m. on Wednesday, officers were dispatched for a 911 Hang Up at the hotel, in which a female requested police to the location and hung up.

SAPD says that as Officer Cordova and Officer Valdez arrived, the suspect began walking away, and Officer Valdez attempted to stop the male from leaving.

Police say that the suspect pulled a handgun out of his waistband and fired towards the officers. Officer Cordova and Officer Santiago returned fire, striking the suspect.

The suspect died on the scene from his wounds. Both Officer Cordova and Officer Valdez were shot and suffered non-life-threatening injuries and have since been released from the hospital.

Although it was initially believed that all three officers had returned fire on the suspect, only Officer Cordova and Officer Santiago returned fire.

The officers have been placed on administrative leave as the SAPD Shooting Team and the Internal Affairs Unit are conducting separate investigations into the shooting.
