AUSTIN, Texas — The U.S. Supreme Court is allowing Texas to use its redrawn congressional map for the 2026 midterm elections. The new map could add five Republican seats, which would allow Texas Republicans to hold up to 30 of the state’s 38 U.S. House seats.

Last month, a federal court blocked the map, calling it a likely racial gerrymander. But yesterday, Justice Samuel Alito wrote it was “indisputable” that the motivation behind the new map was partisan advantage.

After the ruling, reactions poured in from several state lawmakers. Governor Greg Abbott celebrated the victory, saying the new map better aligns the state’s representation in D.C. with the values of Texas. But Democratic lawmakers disagreed. Texas Representative James Talarico said on social media, “voters are supposed to choose their politicians — not the other way around.” He added that the fight will continue until partisan gerrymandering is banned in America.
