The Arizona State Sun Devils will take their 8-4 regular season record to El Paso to play in the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl on New Year’s Eve, per On3’s Brett McMurphy.

Arizona State will play an ACC team who has yet to be revealed.

ASU is 4-3 all-time in Sun Bowl appearances and has won four of its last five, most recently in 2019 behind Jayden Daniels with Herm Edwards as coach.

Those Sun Devils beat Florida State, 20-14, nearly two months after then-Seminoles coach Willie Taggart was fired and 3.5 weeks after former ASU offensive coordinator Mike Norvell was hired to replace him — bringing with him Kenny Dillingham from Memphis.

Dillingham has emphasized ASU’s opportunity to get to 20 wins in a two-year span if it wins the bowl game, something it’s only done once (2013-14) this century.

ASU’s previous Sun Bowl wins came in 2014, 2004 and 1997, with respective victories over Duke, Purdue and Iowa. Its losses came in 2017 (North Carolina), and back when it was Arizona State Teachers College in 1940-41.

TV, time for Sun Bowl

The Sun Bowl, home of the UTEP Miners, will be played on Dec. 31 at noon.

CBS will carry the TV broadcast, it will stream on Paramount Plus and it can be heard on 98.7 and the Arizona Sports app.
