LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Lubbock is among nearly 1,000 cities statewide under investigation of its finances to ensure local governments are not illegally raising property taxes.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton wants the city to turn over its financial documents and audit reports to ensure it’s following a new state law focused on municipal transparency.
Paxton says he won’t allow cities to cover up their finances and burden Texans with never-ending tax increases. He suggests every city must minimize its tax burden, and he says this review will make local governments more accountable.
Back in September, the Lubbock City Council approved a property tax rate above the no-new-revenue rate with a five to two vote.
It forecast raising payments for the average homeowner by about $15 a year, but supporters said it would meet the city’s needs for maintenance and operations.
Mayor Mark McBrayer and District 3 Councilman David Glasheen wanted the lower rate and called for cuts to the city’s spending.
The city publishes comprehensive and popular financial audits each year on its website.
