Scott joined the Longhorns last offseason after highly-regarded running backs coach Tashard Choice left to be part of Dan Campbell’s staff with the NFL’s Detroit Lions.Â
Texas’ rushing offense has averaged 3.9 yards per carry this season. That ranked 10th in the 16-team SEC, and marked the worst average of coach Steve Sarkisian‘s five-year tenure.Â
Both Quintrevion Wisner and CJ Baxter regressed from an efficiency standpoint relative to what they’d shown previously in their careers. Baxter confirmed his intent to enter the transfer portal on Monday, joining fellow running back Jerrick Gibson, who made the same choice midseason. The Longhorns’ attempts to rejuvenate their running game by giving carries to younger backs failed.Â
Texas averaged more than 5 yards per carry in the first three years of Sarkisian’s tenure as head coach. Two of those seasons were overseen by Choice. In 2024 and 2025, though, Texas’ rushing production has plummeted. The Longhorns ranked in the bottom half of the SEC in rushing efficiency in both of those campaigns.Â
Now, they’ll look for a coach who can help them ascend that leaderboard.Â
