One of the more notable pieces of news on Monday was that sophomore running back CJ Baxter is set to explore his options in the transfer portal. He finished with 196 yards on 54 carries this season, and was Texas’ third-leading rusher behind Quintrevion Wisner and quarterback Arch Manning.
Per Pete Nakos of On3, Texas fired running backs coach Chad Scott.
Scott was a longtime assistant coach under Neal Brown at West Virginia, and served as the interim head coach of the Mountaineers when Brown was fired in 2024.
Brown became the assistant to the head coach at Texas in 2025. He left to take the head coaching job at North Texas for 2026.
The running game was a problem for the Longhorns this season. The team finished with 1,556 yards and 14 touchdowns on 394 carries, averaging 3.9 yards per rush. Wisner, a junior, was the leading rusher with 597 yards and three touchdowns on 131 carries.
Manning rushed for 244 yards and eight touchdowns.
While Manning started to develop during the season as a passer, the run game struggled at times in big games. The Longhorns rushed 17 times for just 23 yards in a 35-10 loss to Georgia.
However, Texas did rush for 218 yards and two touchdowns in its 27-17 upset of then-No. 3 Texas A&M.
