EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) – A man was arrested in El Paso County on Oct. 5 after troopers said he was driving 30 miles over the speed limit.
According to the Colorado State Patrol (CSP), a trooper was responding to a crash on Highway 24 at 1:03 a.m. when he spotted a silver Dodge Ram 2500 quickly traveling towards the crash scene.
Troopers said the truck was traveling at 87 mph in a 55 mph zone. The driver allegedly refused to slow down or stop despite the trooper’s activated emergency lights and siren.
Troopers said the driver began accelerating and weaving into oncoming lanes of traffic before turning south onto Marksheffel Road. The driver then turned into oncoming traffic and then back in front of the trooper and continued to flee.
The trooper then used his patrol vehicle’s grappler, an immobilization device designed to entangle a truck’s rear tire, safely ending the pursuit.
The suspect driver, Davonta Skaggs, 22, was taken into custody uninjured. CSP said he did not have a valid driver’s license.
Skaggs was charged with the following:
Vehicular Eluding Created a Substantial Risk of Bodily InjuryReckless DrivingSpeeding (25-39) mph OverDrove Vehicle Without a Valid Driver’s License
CSP said there were four passengers in the truck: two boys, an 18-year-old woman, and a 22-year-old woman.
Three of the passengers were released to a legal guardian. One of the boys was taken into custody for possession of a firearm.
