The Southeastern Conference individual awards, which are voted upon by the league’s 16 head coaches, were handed out on Wednesday and two Aggies managed to bring home hardware to College Station.

Texas A&M edge rusher Cashius Howell was named SEC Defensive Player of the Year after racking up 14 tackles for loss, including an SEC-leading 11.5 sacks. Howell also managed to break up six passes, the second most among all defensive ends in the country.

The former Bowling Green standout is the first Aggie to win the award since the program joined the SEC in 2012, and first A&M player to receive the honor in any league since Dat Nguyen in the Big 12 in 1998. Howell is also a finalist for the Lombardi Award, given to the most outstanding lineman, and the Chuck Bednarik Award, handed to the nation’s best defensive player.
