Man claims he was chased on his property before deadly Lubbock County shooting

  • December 10, 2025

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The man charged in connection with the murder of 53-year-old Alfredo Garza admitted to shooting him after saying he was being chased on his property.

Lubbock County Sheriff’s deputies arrested 54-year-old Leslie Harston and charged him with murder.

LCSO says it responded to reports of shots fired at 2:38 p.m. in the 6100 block of E. County Road 7260.

Court documents reveal after the shooting occured, Harston called and told dispatchers an unknown man, later identified as Garza, was chasing him on his property and he had secured the firearm in the house.

When deputies arrived, they found Garza with multiple gunshot wounds and began life-saving measures. He was taken to UMC with life-threatening injuries where he later died. Harston requested medical treatment and was also taken to UMC.

A pickup truck, believed to be Garzas, was found parked on the property just south of where the initial call came from. Investigators found a bullet hole in the pickup.

Court documents state Harston’s brother was inside the residence when the shooting happened.

He told investigators he was asleep when he was woken up by arguing between Harston and an unknown man outside. He said he heard gunshots moments later, followed by Harston coming inside saying there was a dead body on their property.

After speaking with Harston’s brother, investigators discovered drag marks along the ground of the property. Investigators found injuries to Garza’s back consistent with being drug along the ground.

Harston told detectives he stepped out of his residence with his firearm in his right pocket and started walking towards the road to the north when he was approached by Garza.

Harston said Garza approached him asking to speak to him before calling him a derogatory word. Haston said that’s when Garza started chasing him around his property.

Court documents state “after running around the property twice, [Harston] stopped, turned towards the unknown male, and without saying a word to the unknown male shot him multiple times.”

Harston admitted to investigators Garza did not have any weapons nor did he threaten any physical violence. He also stated he then broke Garza’s phone out of frustration and mentioned dragging his body onto his property because he was lying on the fence lines.

Harston is in the Lubbock County Detention Center on a $250,000 bond.
