DALLAS — Despite some pushback from residents, Dallas is one step closer to opening the first H-E-B within its city limits.

The Dallas City Council on Wednesday night voted to approve a zoning proposal for the planned location along Interstate 635 and Hillcrest Road. The beloved Texas grocery store chain first bought the land in January, but it needed to be rezoned to allow H-E-B to build a 127,000 square-foot store and parking garage.

Opponents of the potential store have voiced their concerns about increased traffic in the Hillcrest neighborhood and possible flooding issues.

Council members heard public comment before overwhelmingly supporting the measure, 14-1.

“We appreciate the thoughtful consideration from city officials, staff, and community members throughout this process,” said Mabrie Jackson, a spokesperson for H-E-B. “We are committed to serving Texans and look forward to bringing our first H-E-B store to the city of Dallas.”

While this will be the first official H-E-B store within Dallas’ city limits, the grocery chain does have Central Market and Joe V’s Smart Shop locations around town.
