AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – Two area high school football teams saw their championship dreams end in the state semifinals, falling just one win short of reaching the title games at AT&T Stadium.
West Texas High falls to Hamilton
In Class 2A Division I, the undefeated West Texas High Comanches lost to Hamilton 28-12 at Iowa Park.
The 14-0 Comanches took an early lead when Kelby Sherwood scored on a rushing touchdown to put West Texas High ahead 6-0 in the first quarter.
Hamilton responded quickly as quarterback Carson Roberts connected with Pierce Summers for a touchdown, giving the Bulldogs a 7-6 lead.
The Comanches had multiple scoring opportunities throughout the game, including a fourth-and-goal situation where Cayde Winters hit Sherwood on a screen pass, but the Hamilton defense stopped the play short of the goal line.
Gruver falls in thriller to defending champions
In Class 2A Division II at Happy State Bank Stadium, the Gruver Greyhounds lost a back-and-forth battle to defending champion Muenster 21-18.
The game featured several momentum swings, starting when Gruver’s Briggs Satterfield found Brock Butler for a spectacular catch where Butler pinned the ball to his helmet.
Muenster took an early 7-0 lead after Rhett Walterscheid forced a fumble and Garrett Hess returned it for a touchdown.
Gruver answered with Satterfield connecting with Butler for a touchdown to make it 7-6.
The Greyhounds took a 12-7 lead in the second quarter on another Satterfield-to-Butler touchdown pass.
Muenster regained the lead 14-12 when quarterback Casen Carney scored on a one-yard keeper and kept the lead headed into halftime.
Satterfield responded with a rushing touchdown to put Gruver back ahead 18-14.
A decisive play came when Carney found Clayton Cunningham for a 71-yard touchdown pass with nine minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, giving Muenster a 21-18 lead.
Gruver had a final drive but turned the ball over on downs when Satterfield was sacked on fourth down.
Muenster advances to the state championship game while both area teams saw their historic seasons end in the semifinals.
