LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Former Lubbock Police Chief Floyd Mitchell has submitted his resignation to the Oakland Police Department, as reported by NBC Bay Area on Wednesday.
Mitchell resigned from the Lubbock Police Department back in September 2023 after criticism of the state of the department’s 911 dispatch. In 2022, more than 30,000 911 calls went unanswered. The minimum staffing for dispatchers was raised to eight in July 2023.
Mitchell was appointed LPD Police Chief in 2019 following the retirement of former Chief Greg Stephens.
Before moving to Lubbock, Mitchell served as the Chief of Police with the Temple Police Department for four years.
Mitchell became chief in Oakland in May 2024 and has submitted his resignation effective Dec. 5.
“It has been an honor to serve the Oakland community, and I am grateful for the support I’ve received from the residents,” Mitchell said. “I’m incredibly proud of the men and women of this Department and the collaborative working relationships forged with the community and business owners to reduce crime. My commitment over the weeks ahead is to help ensure a smooth transition and continue to keep Oakland safe.”
