On Saturday night, Indiana’s starting quarterback, Fernando Mendoza, won the 91st Heisman Trophy after passing for 2,980 yards with 39 total touchdowns, while completing 71.5% of his passes on the year. With the Hoosiers headed to the College Football Playoff as the No. 1-ranked team, this has been a storybook-like season for the former Cal signal caller.

Texas A&M star quarterback Marcel Reed was not a Heisman finalist and did not make the final top 10 group, which was surprising after the redshirt sophomore passed for a career high 2,932 yards, 25 touchdowns, and ran for 466 yards and six scores for 31 total touchdowns on the year. Still, Reed vocally expressed that individual awards weren’t as important as team success, as the Aggies are headed to the CFP for the first time in program history.

After officially announcing his return next season during his appearance on Robert Griffin’s podcast, Reed is one of several players who will be considered Heisman Trophy contenders, as ESPN’s “Way too early” Heisman rankings featured Marcel Reed among 15 other star players, including Miami freshman WR Malachi Toney, who Texas A&M will face this weekend.

Reed is a true dual-threat, and while his ability in the pocket was the focus this season, another year under his belt, paired with more offseason work, makes the Tennessee native one of the most dangerous players in college football.

Reed announced this week that he plans to stay at Texas A&M next season, which is great news for the No. 7 Aggies. He was a threat with the ball in his hands, throwing for 2,932 yards with 25 touchdowns and running for 466 yards with six scores. His decision-making needs to continue to improve, so he can cut down on his 10 interceptions.

While Reed thrived in play-action during the regular season, his ability in drop-back situations, especially when the run game isn’t forcing defenders in the box, has not been his strength, resulting in nearly all of his 10 interceptions on the year.

No. 7 Texas A&M will host No. 10 Miami on Saturday, December 20, at 11:00 a.m., with coverage on ABC and ESPN.
