Simple steps for winter home preparation
These winterization steps can be done any time during the cooler months, the City of Corpus Christi said:
Wrap outdoor and exposed pipes with foam insulation. Towels or pool noodles can also be used.
Disconnect outdoor hoses to prevent water from freezing in the lines.
Cover outdoor faucets with insulated faucet covers or wrap them in towels.
Drain irrigation systems.
Insulate backflow devices to prevent freezing and backflow failure.
Cover or insulate pool equipment to help prevent damage to pumps and filters
If freezing temperatures are in the forecast
When temperatures are expected to fall below freezing (32°F), Corpus Christi Water recommends these additional steps, according to the city’s release:
Open cabinets under sinks in kitchens and bathrooms to allow warm air to circulate around pipes.
Keep your home heated, even when traveling, to maintain indoor temperatures above freezing.
Check for leaks twice a day to catch problems early.
Drip faucets if needed: After taking other preventative measures, select one faucet farthest from the main shut-off valve and set it to drip once every few seconds. The city recommends catching the water in a container for reuse.
The City of Corpus Christi said residents should monitor the weather so they can take preventative steps before temperatures reach freezing. City officials said they will also provide updates through official news releases, local media and social media channels.
