West Texas Hero Homes builds mortgage-free home for Air Force veteran

  • December 16, 2025

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – An organization known for building mortgage-free homes for veterans stepped in to support someone who has given years of service. Community members gathered to bless the bones of the house one local veteran and his family will soon live in.

“It’s not like somebody bought you a book, or a video game. It’s a house, a whole house with a yard and fence,” Staff Sergeant Phillip Jason Greenburg said.

For Greenburg, the weight of that still hasn’t fully set in.

“Something that changes your life forever and you’ll never forget. I don’t know how you top something like that,” he said.

Greenburg served six years in the U.S. Air Force, including time overseas. Like many veterans, the hardest battles followed him home.

The house that he and his family will soon settle into was made possible through West Texas Hero Homes. President Jason Nesloney said honoring veterans like Phillip is at the heart of their mission.

“Being able to give, sacrifice a little of our time and resources or skills to be able to do that for someone who sacrificed for us is an easy way,” Nesloney said.

The organization works alongside community partners, donors, and builders to provide mortgage free homes for veterans who need a stable place to land.

“There’s lots of vets out there that need help, lots of them. In a way I feel like I’m getting this for them. I’m one person getting it there’s a 100 more that deserve it,” Greenburg said.

He lives with lifelong injuries and PTSD. Earlier this year, complications from surgery led to the loss of his leg, another hurdle in a journey shaped by resilience.

The Lubbock community is showing up for them, offering protection and blessings. Scriptures were written throughout the house, a reflection of faith, support, and the foundation of their new beginning.

“It’s been a whirlwind, I had a lot of years where a lot of things went wrong. I’ve had a lot of years recently where a lot of things have gone right,” Greenburg said.
