Whittaker, a Houston native who played running back for the University of Texas at Austin, went on to a six‑season career in the NFL, most notably with the Carolina Panthers. Following his playing career, he transitioned into broadcasting as a college football color analyst for ESPN, bringing his Longhorn experience to a national audience.
Ballet Austin’s “The Nutcracker,” set to Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s iconic score, is a holiday tradition for Central Texas families. The story follows young Clara on a magical journey from a festive Christmas party to the enchanted Land of Sweets, complete with dancing snowflakes, the Sugar Plum Fairy and towering characters like Mother Ginger.
Mother Ginger, in Act II, is known for her oversized skirt, under which a troupe of young dancers emerges. In true Ballet Austin tradition, local celebrities and community leaders are invited to appear in the role. Whittaker’s appearance added hometown flair to the production, bringing a local sports legend to the holiday stage.
Austin Ballet’s production of “The Nutcraker” runs through Dec. 23.
