AUSTIN, Texas — A crash on Tuesday morning shut down all the southbound lanes of MoPac Expressway near U.S. 183 in Austin. Police later confirmed that one person had died in the crash.
The Austin Police Department (APD) closed all southbound lanes of MoPac in the area, including the toll roads, while officials investigated the crash.
According to a preliminary report from APD, officers responded to the crash a little after 9 a.m. after a car rear-ended another vehicle on MoPac.
One driver remained in the area and cooperated with officers. The other driver, who was later identified as Jonhatan Rodriguez, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say this was the 88th fatal crash of 2025, with 92 fatalities for the entire year so far. That’s up a little from this time last year, when there were 87 fatal crashes that resulted in 90 deaths.
