CORVALLIS — Oregon State fell behind early against Sam Houston and never recovered in a 85-75 men’s basketball loss Wednesday night at Gill Coliseum.

Sam Houston (7-3) took a lead 65 seconds into the game and never looked back. The loss, in the final of a five-game Oregon State (6-6) home stand, snapped a three-game winning streak.

“I was very disappointed with our lack of effort,” Oregon State coach Wayne Tinkle said. “It was going to be a rock fight. And we needed to be ready to protect home court and be ready for a fight. And too many of us weren’t ready for that, so shame on us.”

While the teams both shot 44% from the floor, the Bearkats out rebounded Oregon State 46-26, including 15-4 on the offensive glass.

“Worst rebounding job I’ve seen in a while,” Tinkle said. “They manhandled us on the glass.”

Josiah Lake II led Oregon State with 19 points, Keziah Ekissi scored 13, and Dez White added 11 for the Beavers. Kashie Natt put in 19 to lead five Sam Houston players in double figures scoring.

Down 34-23 in the first half, Oregon State responded with a 9-0 run sparked by a deep three from the top of the key from Dez White.

The run included a three from Isaiah Sy after he sidestepped a defender. White capped the run with a fast-break layup off a steal from Yaak Yaak.

After a Sam Houston layup, White hit another three to cut the Bearkats’ lead to 36-35. But that was the closest Oregon State could get.

“We showed a lot of scrap,” Tinkle said. “But we couldn’t get key stops.”

Sam Houston responded with a 10-0 run, which included two layups and two threes, to boost the lead to 46-35.

The Bearkats scored on two layups from Damon Nicholas Jr., a three from Natt, and a layup from Po’Boigh King during an 11-4 run at the start of the second half. Sam Houston built its biggest lead of the game at 60-43 with 14:44 left before holding off another run from the Beavers.

Oregon State reeled off nine straight points to cut the deficit to 64-57 with 7:22 left and had several opportunities to get closer. But the Beavers couldn’t take advantage, and Sam Houston extended the lead back to double digits. King hit a dagger three plus a foul for a four-point play with 1:15 left.

“We have to learn from it,” White said. “We have to come out tougher and be ready for a fight from the jump.”

The Beavers’ next game is noon Sunday at Arizona State (9-3).
