Few college football programs figure more prominently in the history of the sport than the Texas Longhorns and Michigan Wolverines, who are scheduled to meet Dec. 31 in the Citrus Bowl. 

But not much of that history is mutual.

Texas and Michigan have met on the field just twice, with each of those clashes coming in the last 25 years. 

The Longhorns won both of those games, defeating the Wolverines in the 2004 Rose Bowl before claiming a victory at the Big House in 2024. Michigan is due to make a return trip to Royal-Memorial Stadium in 2027.

Texas vs Michigan: Longhorns win 31-12 in 2024 

The last time the Longhorns and the Wolverines met, the game was decided by halftime.

Texas ran out to a 24-3 lead in Ann Arbor at the break and coasted to a 19-point victory over the Wolverines, who were ranked 10th in the country at the time.

Quarterback Quinn Ewers completed 24 of his 36 passing attempts for 246 yards and three touchdowns, while the Longhorns’ offensive line held a loaded Michigan defensive front without a sack. 

The game signaled the start of a breakout season for tight end Gunnar Helm, who caught seven passes for 98 yards and a touchdown. 

But the real dominance came from the Texas defense, which limited Michigan to 284 yards of offense and forced three turnovers, including interceptions by Derek Williams Jr. and Andrew Mukuba.

The Longhorns went on to a 13-3 season that saw them crack the SEC title game and qualify for the semifinals of the College Football Playoff for a second successive year. Michigan ended up 8-5 in coach Sherrone Moore’s first season, finishing off the campaign with a 19-13 win over Alabama in the ReliaQuest Bowl.

Texas vs Michigan: Longhorns win 38-37 thriller to conclude 2004 season

Vince Young delivered several legendary moments wearing the burnt orange, but not many topped his heroics Jan. 1, 2005 in the Rose Bowl.

The Longhorns’ quarterback rushed 21 times for 200 yards and four touchdowns, including a 60-yard scamper in the third quarter. He also threw for 180 more yards and an additional score. 

But Chad Henne did his best to help the Wolverines keep up. Henne compiled 227 passing yards with four touchdowns of his own to set up a memorable late-game sequence. 

Young gave the Longhorns the lead with a 23-yard touchdown run with 4:56 left, but Michigan replied by booting through a field goal to take a 37-35 advantage. That left Young and the Longhorns three minutes to work with, and they managed the clock expertly, driving down the field for Dusty Mangum to connect on a 37-yard field goal as time expired.

That concluded an 11-1 campaign for the Longhorns, who finished fifth in the AP Poll. The following season, Young again led Texas to a Rose Bowl victory, but that one secured a national championship. Michigan finished 9-3 in 2004 and ended the season ranked 14th.
