windy Thursday, record-breaking weekend ahead

  • December 18, 2025

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – A cold front moving through West Texas Thursday morning will bring strong northerly winds and cooler temperatures, but don’t get too comfortable — an unseasonably warm weekend is on the way, and it could shatter December records.

Thursday: brace for the wind

A cold front will sweep across the region Thursday morning, bringing a significant wind shift. Expect northerly winds to increase to 20-30 mph by late morning, with gusts reaching 40 mph possible through the mid-afternoon. These are the kind of winds that can make your commute tricky and knock things around outside, so secure any loose items and be cautious if you’re traveling.

Highs Thursday will reach the middle 50s to lower 60s, still staying above average but actually cooler than recent days. Winds will calm down quickly after sunset, and lows will dip into the lower to middle 30s overnight.

After Thursday’s front passes, high pressure will settle over the region, sending temperatures soaring well above normal for mid-December.

Friday could see highs near 74°F in Lubbock — just one degree shy of the all-time December record of 76°F set back in 1921. Childress could reach 71°F, approaching the 1921 record of 75°F.

Saturday is when things could get really interesting. All-time December records are possible across the area. Lubbock’s record high is 80°F (set in 1921), and the forecast high is 80°F. Childress’ record is 78°F (2010), with a forecast high of 80°F. These would be historic temperatures for late December.

With these warm temperatures and dry conditions, fire weather conditions may develop Saturday, especially with low humidity levels expected to dip around 20 percent.

Sunday: A Cool Down (Sort Of)

A cold front will arrive by dusk Saturday, bringing much cooler air for Sunday. However, “cooler” is relative — highs will still be around 10 degrees above normal for late December.

Looking Ahead to Christmas Week

After Sunday’s brief cool-down, another warm-up will follow into next week. Temperatures are expected to approach 30 degrees above seasonal norms heading into Christmas. Dry conditions will continue throughout this period.
