HOUSTON – A 58-year-old Houston woman has been charged, two weeks after authorities uncovered an active rooster-fighting ring behind a north Houston business.
Graciela Sanchez, 58, was arrested by the Harris County Pct. 1 Constable’s Office Animal Cruelty Unit. She is accused of permitting the property in the 2400 block of Little York to be used for rooster-fighting.
Authorities seized 68 live birds from the property and others that were either dead or severely injured. Several people were also detained and metal spurs and other items believed to be cockfighting paraphernalia were recovered.
The live roosters were brought to the Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Sanchez is charged with cockfighting, a Class A misdemeanor, a charge which carries a penalty of up to a year in jail.
