San Antonio Zoo conservationist Danté Fenolio has been named a finalist for the esteemed Wolfgang Kiessling International Prize for Species Conservation — for the fourth time.
The annual award is presented to individuals whose work protects species, restores habitats and reinforces the role zoos and aquariums have in conservation.
This year’s nominees are spread across 30 countries and six continents, showing its competitive nature and the significance of Fenolio’s work as vice president for the San Antonio Zoo’s Center for Conservation & Research.
Fenolio’s career spans 30 years across multiple groundbreaking achievements in species recovery and community conservation, according to Zoo officials. Notably, he developed the first breeding protocol for the Georgia Blind Salamander and the Reticulated Flatwoods Salamander.
Alongside this, Fenolio founded the San Antonio Zoo’s Project Selva initiative, which works with Indigenous communities in the Amazon to protect rainforest habitats.
“To be named a four-time finalist for this international prize speaks to the life-changing impact of Fenolio’s efforts,” San Antonio Zoo President and CEO Tim Morrow said in a statement. “His vision not only protects species and ecosystems but also inspires others to take action for our planet’s future.”
