Corpus Christi wins Martin’s grant for new stage curtains

  • December 19, 2025

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – It’s a busy time of year with holiday shopping, baking, and wrapping. But some area school kids want you to remember the reason for the season: the birth of Jesus Christ. The kids at Corpus Christi Catholic School in South Bend just held their Christmas concert to celebrate the season.

While that performance was held in the church, other events are held on the stage in the school gymnasium.

Performer Lily Nemeth explained what she loves about music.

“It’s just a way for me to escape the busyness of life,” said Lily, a seventh grader. “It’s just fun to listen to, and it’s just one of my passions.”

“I just love that I get to just perform. And it’s nice when at the end of the show is when people get to clap for you because you spend a lot of hard work on what you just performed,” added Grace Kapicka, a fifth grader at Corpus Christi.

These talented performers serve as a nice distraction to something else on stage.

“The curtains are really old,” said Sophie Mitchell, a seventh grader. “And if we get new ones, then it’ll look better and more professional.”

Teacher Christine Nemeth showed us the problem.

“The track is still salvageable,” Nemeth said. “We had a company come out and say they’re actually dry rotting.”

In one spot, the curtain is literally hanging on by a thread. It’s barely held together by Nemeth’s sewing repairs.

“We’ve attempted to sew it and fix it,” Nemeth said. “I tried cleaning it by hand. That didn’t go very well.”

The 64-year-old school recently restored the gym floor. The Martin’s money will be put towards new curtains, hopefully in 2026.

“We’re hoping to come back even stronger and better with a beautiful new gym floor,” Nemeth said. “With beautiful new curtains next year.”

These are improvements the drama kids can appreciate.

“If you make a mistake, you can always redo it. And show night, you’re always going to have a little pressure on you. But once you do the lines that you’ve been working on,” Kapicka said. “It’s going to be good.”

And that’s a good feeling — just in time for Christmas.
