Movie memorabilia from late Hollywood legend Shelley Duvall’s three-decade career is now up for pre-bid. Texas auction house Vogt has released the catalog for an October 30 sale of the late actresses’ personal collection, including signed posters and other documents from The Shining and Annie Hall.
The collection gives an intimate peek into the life of the iconic actress, whose film career led her to working with the most famous auteurs of 20th-century cinema, including Robert Altman, Stanley Kubrick, Woody Allen, Terry Gilliam, Jane Campion, Steven Soderbergh, and Tim Burton. The auction also includes items from her second act as a producer of beloved children’s programs like Faerie Tale Theatre.
The hottest items in pre-bid come from Duvall’s most iconic role as the terrified Wendy Torrance in Kubrick’s The Shining, including signed cheat sheets, publicity stills, scripts, and several variations on the movie poster. Despite being notoriously antagonized during filming, she never disassociated herself with the movie, still autographing newer merch like a board game, a reproduction room 237 key fob, and even a Funko Pop doll.
The collection also includes a handful of items from Annie Hall, including a signed still and lobby cards. The ephemera is likely to increase in value following the October 11 death of the film’s star, Diane Keaton. Other movie memorabilia includes keepsakes from 3 Women, Brewster McCloud, Nashville, Popeye, and Time Bandits — plus her 1977 Cannes Film Festival award and a director’s chair.
Some of the most fascinating lots tell the story of Duvall’s personal life. Despite Paul Simon leaving her for her friend Carrie Fisher, she kept a collection of his tapes and a well-worn photograph of the former couple. And she displayed a portrait of Kubrick — a 2000 Christmas gift from his wife, Christiane Kubrick.
The lots also include several personal items, including dresses, boots, wigs, jewelry, family photos, and childhood drawings. Duvall’s love of fairy tale aesthetics was no affectation. All of the furniture has a whimsical feel, from a pair of tree stump garden tables to a Black Forest-style hall tree featuring a carved climbing bear.
The live auction will be held at 7 pm on October 30 at Duvall’s sprawling Blanco ranch. The 11-acre property recently hit the market at a $699,000 asking price. Movie fans can register and browse through the full auction catalog online. Pre-bids are open now.
Duvall, a Texas native, died at age 75 in July 2024 at her Hill Country ranch.
