If you’re expecting the classic, sprawling department store experience, you’re in for a surprise. I stopped by the brand-new Belk Market at The Centre at Preston Ridge to see what this new concept is all about, and the vibe is a total departure from their traditional mall locations.
The Layout
The company might call it a “market,” but the layout is almost a carbon copy of a Nordstrom Rack. It’s a wide-open floor plan where you can see nearly the entire store from the entrance.
The shoe section is massive and, exactly like the Rack, it’s organized strictly by size. It makes for a much faster hunt.
I went in just to scout for this article and ended up leaving with two new pairs of sandals. With this “winter” weather we’re having, I couldn’t resist — especially with a $12 price tag. I also snagged a bikini for $50; while not a bottom-dollar bargain, I liked it enough to grab it.

What’s Inside: The Breakdown
While the store is smaller than a typical anchor, they’ve packed a lot into the footprint:
Women’s Everywhere: The store is dominated by women’s apparel — this is definitely the primary focus of the inventory.
Home Goods: Surprisingly, the home section is pretty large and nicely laid out. It’s worth a walk-through even if you aren’t clothes shopping.
Kids Section: The clothing area for kids is a decent size, but keep in mind, there are no kids’ shoes.
The Checkout Extras: There isn’t a dedicated toy department, but they have a very small gift and toy area right by the registers. It’s perfect for last-minute grabs. I picked up a sketchbook for the kids and an EOS lip balm while checking out.
The Verdict
The experience feels much more like a discount destination than a traditional department store. It has that treasure hunt energy where you’re digging through racks to find a hidden gem. It’s built for the shopper who wants to pop in, find a deal, and get out without the mall hassle.
