EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Plaza Hotel Pioneer Park, in Downtown El Paso, will exhibit more than 20 illustrations made by legendary El Paso artist Tom Lea.

This Saturday, The Plaza Hotel, 106 W. Mills Ave., will have an opening reception for an exhibit of Lea’s work that illustrated Carl Hertzog’s 1962 book, “Forty Years at El Paso.”

The special event will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20 at the hotel. Admission is free with registration.

The book recounted W.W. Mills’ experience in what was then a small adobe settlement in the mid- to late 19th century.

The illustrations created by Lea for the book bring Mills’ experiences to life.

In partnership with the Tom Lea Institute, the hotel will host an exhibit of 22 illustrations done by Lea, along with a display of the original book.

The illustrations are scheduled to be on view through March 2026. Additional receptions will be held monthly through March, on the last Thursday of each month.
