Carthage High Bulldogs take on West Orange-Stark in Texas state championships

ARLINGTON, Texas (KSLA) – Carthage completed an undefeated season and captured back-to-back state championships with a 49-21 victory over West Orange-Stark in the 4A Division II championship game at AT&T Stadium.

The victory marks Carthage’s 11th state title since 2008 and their third undefeated season since 2018. The Bulldogs dominated from the opening drive, building a 28-0 halftime lead.

Carthage struck quickly in the first quarter when running back KJ Edwards broke free for a 75-yard touchdown run on the second play from scrimmage. Edwards, who has committed to Mississippi State, finished with 153 yards and two touchdowns.

The Bulldogs defense, which recorded three shutouts this season, forced multiple turnovers. Zakarian Pearly stopped West Orange-Stark quarterback Kwalin Dugas on fourth down and made another key tackle in the second quarter.

Quarterback Jett Surratt connected with junior Henderson on a 77-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 21-0. Henderson finished with 126 yards on four receptions.

With less than a minute remaining in the first half, Surratt threw a touchdown pass to Bryston Price, giving Carthage a 28-0 halftime advantage.

Surratt completed 20 of 28 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns before being pulled in the fourth quarter. The victory capped the final game for the father-son coaching duo of Scott and Jett Surratt.

“I was fine until I got to my wife. She was teared up and I was teared up, I’m teared up for all of these guys, special group, just a special group,” said Scott Surratt, Carthage head football coach.

Edwards credited his offensive line for his success.

“Give a shoutout to my O-line. Without those guys, none of the holes would’ve been opened up for me. I just used my God given talent,” Edwards said.

Defensive back Tylin Williams, who blocked a punt for a score, said he was ready to make plays.

“I used the line, missed tackles they’re used to tackling. I told them I’m coming to make the hit,” Williams said.

For Jett Surratt, the quarterback who will play golf in college, the back-to-back titles held special meaning.

“Been a part of all of them, but the fact the last two are my rings… it’s awesome,” Jett Surratt said.

Scott Surratt will remain as head coach to continue the winning tradition at Carthage.
