With the new year just around the corner, change is in the air across San Antonio TV newsrooms. A familiar face is preparing for a new chapter in the months ahead.

This week, Ryan Shoptaugh, a meteorologist at KENS 5, announced he will move into a new position within the company beginning in January. While remaining based in San Antonio, he will continue working within TEGNA as a Multi-Market Meteorologist, helping cover weather across Texas and cities throughout the South.

Unlike annual New Year’s resolutions, local viewers will not have to go cold turkey. As fans flooded the comments on Shoptaugh’s announcement with well wishes, he confirmed he would still make on-air appearances in San Antonio “every now and then.”

The post also drew reactions from familiar faces across Texas television. Alan Holt, who previously worked at KIII, congratulated Shoptaugh on the move, writing, “Congrats Ryan! Looking forward to seeing you in this role.” One viewer from Shoptaugh’s past market added, “The Alan Holt cult left town. Come on back.”

The shift comes more than four years after Shoptaugh returned home in November 2021 to join the KENS 5 weather team. Since then, he has covered a range of significant weather events affecting South and Central Texas, from severe storms to periods of extreme heat.

A San Antonio native, Shoptaugh graduated from the University of the Incarnate Word in 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in operational meteorology. His career began in the Rio Grande Valley at KGBT before moving to Corpus Christi in 2018 to join KENS’ sister station, KIII.

Outside the newsroom, Shoptaugh stays active through exercise, swimming, and team sports. He also enjoys discovering hidden trails across San Antonio on his mountain bike and taking long walks with his dog, Stormy, according to reports.
