Plano ISD is proud to celebrate a remarkable achievement by two students who have been recognized for their contributions to a newly issued U.S. patent: UV Exposure Monitoring and Alerts Application.
Congratulations to Shriya Viswanathan and Saura Agarwal, both current 12th grade students at Plano Senior High School and in the IB program at Plano East Senior High, respectively. This patent is the culmination of work they began in the Renner Middle School science fair when they were both middle school students. Their dedication, creativity and leadership reflect the best of our district community, and we look forward to seeing how they continue to grow as innovators and problem-solvers.
The patent introduces a personalized system that monitors a user’s UV exposure in real time and sends alerts when it becomes unsafe. It combines a mobile app, UV sensors and user-specific factors, such as skin tone, family history of skin cancer and sunscreen SPF, to calculate a safe exposure limit and notify the user before harm occurs.
This system offers a new approach to preventing sun-related skin damage by giving users individualized, science-based exposure limits. It represents forward-thinking engineering and problem-solving, qualities these students have demonstrated throughout their involvement.
Plano ISD is proud of these students’ creativity and STEM leadership.
