GALVESTON, Texas (KTRK) — Three people are confirmed dead after a plane crash near Galveston on Monday afternoon, the U.S. Coast Guard announced.
The Coast Guard confirmed it got a report at 3:20 p.m. of a crash west of the Galveston Causeway with eight people on board. The Coast Guard said it has launched a boat and a helicopter to search for the plane.
A Mexican Navy official confirmed to ABC News that the plane belonged to its institution and was on a medical support mission with the Michou y Mau Foundation when it “experienced an accident.”
Officials have not revealed why the plane went down.
The Michou y Mau Foundation’s website says it transfers pediatric burn patients from Mexico to Shriners in Galveston.
The Galveston County Sheriff’s Office is urging the public to avoid the area as emergency responders continue to work on the scene.
The sheriff’s office said its Dive Team, Crime Scene Unit, Drone Unit, and Patrol are supporting the Texas Department of Public Safety on the investigation.
