6 years after warnings, deadly wrong-way crash on Grand Parkway leaves 3-year-old as sole survivor

  • December 23, 2025

FORT BEND COUNTY, Texas – Six years after KPRC 2 Investigates first raised concerns about deadly dangers along the Grand Parkway, those warnings are resurfacing following a tragic wrong-way crash that left three people dead and a 3-year-old child as the only survivor.

In 2018, 2 Investigates documented a troubling pattern of fatal crashes on the Grand Parkway. Now, deputies say another deadly incident has occurred near FM 1464, just miles from where those earlier concerns were raised.

According to the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office, a family of four from Harris County was driving northbound on the Grand Parkway early Saturday morning when a vehicle traveling the wrong way crashed into them. A 27-year-old woman and a 5-year-old child were pronounced dead at the scene. A 26-year-old man later died at the hospital. The only survivor of the crash is a 3-year-old child.

Deputies say the 28-year-old driver accused of traveling the wrong way was taken to the hospital and is expected to face charges, though investigators have not yet specified what those charges will be.

The Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office identified the people who died as Lizbeth Rodriguez Contreras, 27, Diego Pena Jr., 26, and Camila Pena, 5.

Investigators say safety issues along this stretch of Highway 99 remain a concern. The roadway has limited street lighting, vehicles often travel at high speeds, and wrong-way warning signs are sparse. In dark conditions, deputies say it can be difficult for drivers to realize a vehicle is headed the wrong direction until it’s too late.

The crash remains under investigation as authorities continue to examine whether additional safety measures are needed along the Grand Parkway.
