An 18-year-old member of the South Oak Cliff football team was arrested early Sunday after accidentally shooting a teammate, according to online police records and the arrest affidavit obtained by The Dallas Morning News.

Xavier Mayfield was booked into the Dallas County jail Sunday on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to online records. His bail is set at $50,000, and it wasn’t immediately clear Monday whether he had an attorney.

According to the affidavit, Mayfield accidentally discharged a rifle during a Saturday-night celebration at 6400 Knoll Ridge Drive in Dallas County. The victim, who was identified in the affidavit, was a teammate of Mayfield’s, a person who was briefed on the situation confirmed to The Dallas Morning News.

DISD officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Mayfield told police he turned around toward the victim when a single shot went off from the rifle that Mayfield was holding, hitting the victim in the neck, according to the affidavit. Mayfield said that he was taking the victim to the hospital when 911 was called due to excessive bleeding.

One witness stated that the teens were looking over photos taken from the state championship game when Mayfield was seen swinging the rifle identified in the shooting, according to the affidavit. The witness said that Mayfield told them that the rifle’s safety was on.

The victim was taken to the hospital, and his condition wasn’t immediately known, according to media reports.

South Oak Cliff won the Class 5A Division II state championship earlier Saturday afternoon, and Mayfield had a key interception in its 35-19 win over Richmon Randle at Arlington’s AT&T Stadium.
