ASCENSION PARISH, La. (WAFB) – A Texas man has been ordered to spend two decades behind bars after being convicted of a deadly crash where officials say he drove the wrong way down the interstate while impaired in Sorrento.
According to the 23rd Judicial District Attorney’s Office, a judge sentenced Joshua Cannon, 36, of Nederland, Texas, on Dec. 15, 2025, to 20 years with the Louisiana Department of Corrections with credit for time served.
The sentence comes months after officials say Cannon pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide and DWI 3rd offense on May 19, 2025.
His sentence had been deferred pending a pre-sentence investigation, according to the district attorney’s office.
The deadly crash happened in October of 2023.

Louisiana State Police identified the woman who was killed in the crash as Jaranisha Carter, 23, of Prairieville.
Troopers said Cannon was driving a 2010 Chevrolet Traverse west in the eastbound lanes of I-10 when he hit Carter’s 2008 Honda Accord head-on in the eastbound lane.
Cannon displayed multiple signs of impairment during the on-scene investigation, according to state police.
He was arrested after being released from the hospital for moderate injuries he sustained in the crash, added state police.
